Some amazing places are only accessible by boat while others are also accessible by car but who can resist a cruise around the island and pit stop for a swim at some incredible turquoise waters? During the summer season, small and medium sized cruise boats embark on daily cruises on the northwestern side of the island. Visit the uninhabited island of Thodorou which is populated by the indigenous and endangered species of goats called Kri Kri. Then enjoy a smooth cruise to the far northwestern island of Gramvousa; the pirates island. At the top of a steep rock you will encounter the castle of Gramvousa, built by the Venetians in 1569 which can be reached after a 20’ hike. The panoramic views are exquisite as you can see the famous shipwreck on the beach below. Next stop is the sea lagoon of Balos. This is a sight for sore eyes… a tropical landscape with incredible turquoise, shallow waters and fine light pink sand that entices you to swim. Due to the incredible natural beauty and unique indigenous ecosystem, both Gramvousa and Balos are included in the European initiative NATURA 2000. Their protection is imperative and visiting should comply with the strict rules of proper behavior, set by law.

Agii Apostoli is a coastal suburb of Chania, just 4km from the city center. It consists of three peninsulas that create 4 beach coves and a grove where one may outdoor fitness equipment, a running lane and a playground. East of the grove there is a football court, while on the main beach there are facilities of the very popular beach volley, beach tennis and racket-ball. The area is ideal for the entire family to enjoy a fitness day. You may also load your bicycles onto the car, the area is flat and very charming, very pleasant to ride along the coast. The best way to finish off your exercise routine is to head to the beach and have a refreshing swim. The water is clean earning a blue flag each year, the beach is sandy and organized with umbrellas, sun loungers and beach bars to serve you coffee, beverages and snacks.

The artificial lake of Agia is located in the village of Agia, 9km west of Chania. It is an artificial lake of 450 acres adjacent to Fasa valley on the south side. This particular valley is supposed to be the most humid valley of Crete. The lake is water supplied by underground springs and by the Xekolomeno River. This little lake is a very significant wetland and a habitat for a great variety of plants, and an endemic range of animal species such as that of endemic ferns and frogs. The lake also serves as a refuge for migratory and not migratory birds. The environmental significance of Agia Lake is also reflected in the fact that it is an internationally protected lake. In recent years the area has been transformed with the addition of an environmental friendly walking lane that almost encircles the entire surface of the lake, making it an ideal destination for walking and cycling, while enjoying the beautiful, lush nature. Sporadic benches and picnic tables under the trees offer the visitors the opportunity to enjoy a picnic and a full day in nature. There are also two restaurants cafes that look over the lake and are popular among the locals. An excursion at Agia Lake is worth it all year round.
