CHANIA IN NUMBERS
The city of Chania, the capital of the Chania prefecture, is located on the north-eastern part of the prefecture and constitutes its administrational, financial, commercial and communication center, carrying the same name. The Municipality of Chania, following the administrational reform, under the name Kallikratis program, is comprised of seven municipal units (previously Municipalities): Akrotiri, Eleftherios Venizelos, Therissos, Keramia, Nea Kydonia, Souda, Chania.
The Municipality of Chania abuts the Municipality of Platania in the West, the Municipality of Sfakia in the South and the Munipality of Apokoronas in the East, while the entire northern side is exposed the Cretan Pelagos. The entire surface of the Municipality measures to 356.12 km². The population permanently residing in Chania, according to the statistical data of the most recent national census I 2011 conducted by the Greek Statistics Authority counts to 108.642 residents. This number represents the 17.4 % of the entire Crete (623.065 residents) and about the 1% of the entire Greek population (10.815.197 residents).
