EVANGELISTRIA – CHALEPA
If you find yourself in the charming area of Chalepa, it is impossible to miss the sight of Evangelistria church on the crossroad of Eleftheriou Venizelou Str, Profitis Elia Str and George Romanou Str.. A big, double bell towered, cross shaped church with an impressive blue dome and two clocks on each side is located on an inclining slope facing west the rest of the city. It is the largest church in the Municipality of Chania, in an historic race among the boroughs in the early 20th century, to construct the biggest church. In 1908, the Cretan state gave away a substantial plot that was once the army Ottoman stables, for the construction of a grand church. However, due to lack of adequate financial funding, its construction took 15 long years until completion. Ambitious locals and patriotic, Orthodox drive among the members of the Chalepa community, led to the collection of private funds and lotteries from all over the world, among the Christian Orthodox countries. On the 12 of August 1923, the official opening ceremony was held by the Bishop of Chania, Agathaggelo Ninolaki. The church of Evangelistria is very popular among the local, and due to its large capacity, various prominent ceremonies are being held there.
