SALIS - A MODERN SAINT
His Greek name was Salis Helidonakis, a descendant of workers from the Egypt era of Chania, originally from Soudan and he was commonly acknowledged, recognized and respected for his kindness, his workmanship and his originally good heart.
As a kid he was working on the Harbor boats, offloading and transporting luggage and passengers at the time where the harbor was inaccessible due to draft issues. He was a colored Muslim that stood out for his character and his kindness. Due to his strength and swiftness he was always first in line, a fact that made him a beloved and recognizable character in his many years as a boatman.
