Keramia, or Keramies, is a village at a distance of 16 km to the south of Chania city. The village lies on a high altitude on the foothills of the imposing White Mountains of Crete. Although the road leading to the village is winding, it will reward you with its splendid view. The trip is well worth taking, as you get to experience the unique landscape of the area, which is more authentic, partly due to the smaller numbers of daily visitors.
Keramia is essentially a union of smaller settlements in the surrounding area, all sharing similar characteristics and the atmosphere of a traditional village on the Cretan mountains. In the area there are two interesting gorges, the Cyclamen Gorge, an easy to walk gorge with huge plane trees and cypresses, and the Diktamos Gorge, a beautiful shady gorge with lush vegetation. In Keramia or Keramies village there are also some noteworthy byzantine churches, and some very good taverns serving traditional Cretan dishes.
