Kounoupidiana village is pretty close to Chania city. In fact, it is the first village we encounter as we take the road from the city heading to Akrotiri. In recent years Kounoupidiana has become very popular and many citizens of Chania city have moved here due to its healthy climate. Next to Kounoupidiana there is also the campus of the Technical University of Chania, and a number of students also stay in the area.
As the village is located on the south part of the Akrotiri peninsula, it combines easy access to both Chania city (and its eclectic Halepa neighborhood) and the magnificent beaches of Akrotiri. Especially the beaches of Kalathas and Agios Onoufrios are very close to the village. Pretty close to Kounoupidiana village is also the historic location of the Venizelos Graves, the resting place of the prime politician of modern Greece, the Chania-born Eleftherios Venizelos who was buried here in 1936.
